Outpatient Mental Health Services for Teens: Why Choose Us?

Families across Alaska have been turning to North Star Behavioral Health for adolescent services for over 20 years. We can help teens who are experiencing cases of depression, anxiety and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Our multidisciplinary team of psychiatrists, therapists and other providers deliver evidence-based care. Your child will engage in small group therapy settings dedicated to adolescents and the mental health issues impacting their lives. We use a family-focused approach, keeping parents and guardians up to date on treatment progress and discussing what to work on at home.

We can also help coordinate ongoing care for your child with community-based providers.

Our Mental Health Services for Adolescents

We offer two forms of outpatient mental health services for teens at Branches of Alaska Southcentral. These include:

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

Our PHP provides adolescents with structured mental health services six hours a day, five days a week. It’s for adolescents who need more support than traditional outpatient therapy. We help your child learn to manage their emotions and work through challenges.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Our IOP for adolescents provides structured mental health support three hours a day, three days a week. One of the goals is to help your child put into practice what they’ve learned in therapy. The flexible format enables adolescents to resume daily activities between sessions, including attending school.

How Intensive Outpatient and Partial Hospitalization Programs Support Your Child’s Journey

Adolescence is a time of incredible growth and self-discovery. As teens navigate the natural challenges of building their independence, having the right emotional and mental support can make all the difference in helping them reach their full potential.

IOPs and PHPs are designed to give teens the extra guidance and structured care they need during challenging times. Rather than letting school, friendships or daily responsibilities become overwhelming, these programs offer a supportive space where your teen can learn healthy coping skills, build resilience and strengthen their relationships.

Who Can Benefit from an Adolescent IOP or PHP?

Our IOP and PHP can benefit adolescents who are:

  • Having sleeping issues
  • Struggling with frequent or intense worrying
  • Experiencing intense mood swings
  • Showing signs of self-harm or talking about suicidal ideation*
  • Struggling with substance use
  • Finding themselves suddenly struggling with school
  • Withdrawing from friends or social activities

* If you believe your teen is experiencing a mental health emergency, CALL 988 or seek the nearest emergency room. For physical health emergencies, CALL 911 or get to the nearest emergency room.
